The Killing Fields

Yesterday we traveled by bus to Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

We went today to the Killing Fields of Choeung Ek, about 14 km from Phnom Penh. Nearly 20,000 people were murdered there between 1975-1979, and buried in mass graves, about half of which have been excavated:

A stupa at the site contains the skulls of more than 8,000 victims, a stark memorial to the terror visited by the Khmer Rouge on their own countrymen.

Many of the remains show evidence of blunt trauma, as the victims were beaten to death in an effort to save bullets. These people were killed for crimes such as speaking to foreigners, wanting to flee the country, and wearing spectacles.
